Best T&F Meet of the Year

Penn Cover

Ahh…The Penn Relays! The best Track & Field meet of the year. I’ve been attending this landmark event since the early 1970’s and every year is better than the previous one.

This year, as in the last few, I’ll be here as part if the MileSplit Network coverage team as a photographer. I’ll also be posting here on notable happenings related to the New Jersey scene. Check back for updates.

Thoughts from Thursday. Ladies Day @ Franklin Field…

With the horrific tragedy of Boston still fresh and the fear of violence at another major sporting event on everyone’s mind, the Penn Relay’s management, which by the way does a great job , instituted increased security measures including a ban on duffel bags and backpacks for spectators and a more thorough search of all other belongings, including “wand waves”. Really, a minor inconvenience, but a reminder nonetheless.

The highlight of the day, for me, was the performance of the Columbia team. Despite a DNF in the 4×100 qualifier, Lisa Morgans troops have moved on the 2 Championship of America finals. The 4x800m team moved along with a 9:17.23 performance (w/o Olivia Baker) and a sizzling 3:42.75 (with Baker anchoring in 54.xx). This team will giver the powerhouse schools from Jamaica a run for their money today (Fri.)

Columbia ends 30 year drought for NJ in the COA 4×800 Relay!

With Olivia Baker, arguably the most unflappable runner in New Jersey, running a 2:10.00 anchor to overcome a huge Edwin Allen (Jam) lead, the Cougars from Maplewood  took the Championship of A,merica title a little while ago with a time of 8:56.37.

Check out my interviews with Coach Lisa Morgan and the team on MileSplit’s coverage of the Penn Relays.
