April is Not the Cruelest Month…At Least not the Last Weekend

IMG_0002I remember watching Columbia coach, Lisa Morgan seconds after Olivia Baker crossed the line, victorious in the 2013 HS Girls Championship of America 4×800 meter Relay. It was reminiscent of the iconic video clip of Jimmy Valvano after the improbable N.C. State national championship game. Morgan was, just as Valvano had been, so ecstatic and darting around the infield looking for everyone and no one. I went across the track and yelled to her and we exchanged a gigantic hug that I will never forget.

Those are the kind of memories that make The Penn Relays one of the Great Track & Field events in the world. Every April, thousands of athletes have the opportunity to create that kind of moment. That moment occurred for the Columbia Girls and Lisa Morgan after their win in 2013. They came back in 2014 and did it again, back to back Championship of America wins in the HS Girls 4x800m Relay.

After last year’s win, I sat with the team and Coach Morgan to talk about the race and the win. The following is the reedited version of my interview with the team. One of the takeaways from my conversation with this group of remarkable young women is the belief in themselves and in the team that gave them the confidence to achieve a great thing.
