Friday Night Lights…SJ Track Style

A runner makes his way along a trail on a butte in front of the "super Moon" at Papago Park in Phoenix

Rowan U. High School Girls Open, May 1

This is one of my favorite meets of the Outdoor season. A two day Girls only twilight event, this meet offers a full range events from the Pentathlon to the 2000m Steeplechase. It’s part street fair, part dance party and all competitive Track and Field Meet held mostly under the lights at Rowan University in Glassboro. Rowan U. Womens Coach and South Jersey Track impresario Ringo Adamson puts on quite a show and the crowd, especially the kids, love it.

The action on the track kicks off with the 2000m Steeplechase. It is seldom run in New Jersey and for a lot a the runners it’s the first and/or only time they’ll run it. But, watch the clip and you’ll see the energy that these athletes bring to the race. It’s a great race to watch and obviously a great race for the ladies

The race was won by Amanda Bakley, a junior at Pennsauken HS, who is a soccer player in the fall. Her time was (7:15.62). According to my alma mater, NJ MileSplit, it is the 4th fastest 2000m Steeplechase ever run by a Jerser. Let’s hope Pennsauken coach Phil Zimmerman can talk Amanda into running XC in the fall. After the win, only her 3rd ever competitive Steeplechase, Amanda took a few minutes to talk with us.

The next distance race was the 1500m Run. It was great to see Haddonfield soph Briana Gess tear it up after being injured during Indoor and just rounding back into shape. Her time of 4:39.38 was just shy of the meet record of 4:39.20 set in 2012 by Kristen Traub.

After her race, Briana took us through the race and talked about her return to fitness and racing

Next up, recaps of the 2 Mile Run and the David K. Long 800m Run along with our interviews with the winners.

Come on back and see it.

  1. Thanks for sharing. This was Mollys 1st real Steeplechase(water hurdle) and she said it was the most fun she has had running.
