Friday Night Lights Part Deux…More From Rowan

The distance portion of the Rowan U. HS Girls Open continued with the 2 Mile Run, which was run as the evening turned to night down on the track at Richard Wacker Stadium. It was an interesting race to watch as Mainland Reg. frosh Alyssa Aldridge who made a huge splash at the Cross Country MOC with her second place finish took command early and built up a sizable lead on the field. It looked like a sure win for Aldridge until the bell lap when Rancocas Valley senior Shelby Bobbie went to the next gear and kicked from about 300m out. Going by Aldridge with about 100m to the finish, Bobbie took the win with a time of 11:05.53. Shelby told us about the race right after the finish.

The next distance race on the track was the David K. Long 800 Meters. Named in honor of my late brother-in-law and dear friend. A half miler at East Brunswick HS in the early seventies, Dave was always physically active and raised a family that followed his love of the athletic life. The winner of this race is the recipient of a $200 donation to her school’s general scholarship fund.

Kayla Martin of Seneca HS went to the front early and built a lead of approx 15 meters as the field strung out. she went through the mid point in about 63 seconds and continued to look strong through the second lap. The soph who is new to running the 800m crossed the line in 2:16.09 (NJ #1).

After receiving her awards for the win, Kayla gave us a few minutes amidst the noise on the infield.
